Story of Liz
Liz Blaz has been making masks for thirty years.
After working as a designer and stagehand in New
York, San Francisco, and Minneapolis, she went to
Italy to learn traditional Commedia dell' Arte leather maskmaking techniques.
In the course of her career as a maskmaker, she
has made masks for a number of theaters and dance companies. She has had the honor of collaborating with Native Americans of various tribes including an Ojibwe pipecarrier, Dakota Sundancers, and Lakota Ghostdancers making masks for a number different projects. Liz has been selling her masks for Carnival season and Mardi Gras since 1984. She still makes masks for theater companies in North America and Europe.
Currently, Liz is working with other artists to establish the Guild of Maskmakers to
promote masking in general and preserve the techniques of making and the traditions of wearing masks.
